All the buildings at the New England Biolabs new campus in Ipswich, MA are fed from a central chilled water plant. Two 430 ton water-cooled chillers are used to produce chilled water, and the chillers are cooled by two 430 ton cooling towers. The plant uses the Clearwater Dolphin system to eliminate the need for chemical treatment of the condenser water. Use of the Dolphin System eliminates the potential for environmentaldamage caused by discharge of toxic chemicals, while also saving 10-15% annually in water usage (as compared to chemical treatment). Biological control under the Dolphin System has consistently been measured at less
than 10,000 cfu/ml with analysis performed by State Certified Laboratory. Use of the Dolphin System at New England Biolabs contributed a valuable point towards LEED certification of this $20 million project.
