Case Study
Matignon High School
Cambridge, MA
THE PROBLEM
Steam trap failure was extensive. The school could not maintain steam pressure and heat the school. Steam was venting from the receiver tanks. The boiler ran non-stop and could not reach design steam pressure. Energy bills were high.
THE SOLUTION

Conservation Solutions Corporation was called in to solve the problems on an emergency basis over a Thanksgiving vacation 7 years ago. All the steam traps were replaced or retrofitted with the SteamLoc® Tubular Outlet Steam Traps. Energy use and cost dropped dramatically. The boilers were able to reach desired steam pressures and maintain steam pressure. Steam no longer vented from the receivers tanks. Including SteamLoc® traps were installed on applications including with varying loads such as radiators, air handlers and Domestic Hot Water Heaters.

The SteamLoc® steam traps have never been replaced since the traps were installed almost 10 years ago. This has resulted in long term energy savings.

Additional Problem Solving Services

On two separate occasions, a new steam boilers were later improperly installed by an outside contractors resulting in as much as 300% - 400% more water in the steam system. The steam lines were flooded and there was significant water hammer noise. Conservation Solutions Corporation assisted the school in identifying the problems with the near boiler piping and making the contractors change the piping to dry out the steam and eliminate the water hammer noise in the school caused by excess water in the steam system.

Boiler Water Treatment

There was no water treatment for the boilers resulting in corrosion of the steam “system” piping due to low pH or acid condensate. Conservation Solutions Corporation provided a complete simple low cost water treatment program that reduces corrosion and protects the steam system piping.
